Sports Apparel | PATS NOTEBOOK: Robinson Gets Another Shot
That’s not the best opportunity to earn a roster spot.
Hoyer took a shot to the face with 3:39 left in the fourth quarter of the Patriots’ 20-17 preseason-ending loss to the New York Giants, while being sacked by defensive end Tommie Hill, and was seen getting medical attention on the sideline afterward. Robinson, the seventh-round draft pick out of Oklahoma State, hurriedly entered the game and completed one pass to Darnell Jenkins for 6 yards before the Patriots had to punt the ball away.
He had a chance, for the second time this preseason, to engineer a game-winning drive. A 35-yard kickoff return by Buddy Farnham after Duke Calhoun’s 60-yard touchdown reception, putting the Giants up 20-17, gave the Patriots decent field condition with 1:43 left.
But Robinson missed connections on all four passes. A throw deep over the middle to Rob Myers went through the tight end’s hands and a short pass to Thomas Clayton was broken up by the Giants’ Jonathan Goff. Robinson was rushed and missed connections with Taylor Price to set up fourth down, and Price just missed getting his second foot inbounds on a sideline pass that would have kept the stakes moving.
“It’s really out of my control, and we’ll see what happens,” he said. “I’m just really thankful for the opportunity to be out here.”
Robinson may be a good candidate for the practice squad, which must be set on Sunday. The Patriots have to reduce the roster to 53 players by 6 p.m. Saturday.
“I’ve been learning a lot,” the rookie said. “There’s a lot to learn on offense, and I’ve just been trying to take it a day at a time, and try to learn a little bit each day. I try to ask Tom (Brady) questions and Brian (Hoyer) and Billy (O’Brien, quarterbacks coach), and just try to get to where I can feel comfortable with the offense.
“I think it’s been exciting,” he added. “I obviously have a really long way to go as far as learning the offense and getting things down where you can feel comfortable and play fast. It’s been fun to get here and experience all the things rookies get to experience.”
